Sunidhi Chauhan Talks about her Experience on Indian Idol 5!

Sur aur taal hona bahut zaroori hai acchi aawaaz ke saath. Music is a combination of a good voice, music and rhythm. Nothing from these three can be missing.

You know what, my career too kicked off on a reality show. Things were different back then—I was young and no one probably thought I’d make it big. Today, though, reality shows are a great platform for singers to come and showcase their talent. They become 15-minute celebrities and that’s where they take off. The best part about being on Indian Idol 5 is that you get to see so much great talent across the country. Indian Idol has definitely grown as a show and I am so glad that I am part of the 5th season!

What really touched me in Mumbai was the Maharashtrian-style welcome given to us; Anuji, Salim and myself. The Victoria ride too was imminently enjoyable. As a city Mumbai has always been a mixed bag when it comes to aspiring singers. During the first auditions, we came across Melvin, a Goan who was quite an interesting guy. Aawaz bhi thi aur style bhi. Actually bahut hi different style tha uska, especially the way he dressed. Jab poocha ki is dressing style ke peeche kya raaz hai, he said his inspiration was Gandhiji! My God mujhe kaafi anokha laga woh! But unfortunately his singing skills were not as diverse.

Another thing I’ve been hearing from people is ki audition kaisa hota hai, how do good singers get eliminated, why do you encourage lesser singers etc. etc. Main ek hi baat kehna chahti hun, koi achcha koi bura nahi hota hai, competition mein sab barabar hotein hai. Sabko ek baar mein hee prove karna hota hai, magar kabhi second chances kabhi bahut kuch prove kar jaatein hai. For e.g. Riya. Pehli baar mein, we were not impressed by her. Magar jab Anuji ne use doosra chance diya, she won our hearts!

Nagpur too did not impress us much. Only one contestant, Geethesh made it as he was good. He presents a unique fusion of classical and Bollywood songs and he was an instant hit. He even got a hug from Salim!

Mujhe auditions mein ladai karna pasand nahi. Lekin kya kare, kabhi mahaul thoda garam ho hi jaata hai, thanks to the differing opinions between myself, Anuji and Salim. But I’m glad that most of the times we have good, healthy arguments, and in any case off the show all three of us are good friends. Abhijeet Sawant kabhi kabhi help karte hai mahaul ko thanda karne mein.
